Social Networking websites are changing literally every month. They are adding tons of new features just to make we keep using their websites. But yes, as there are benefits of using Social Networks, there are benefits of using their features as well.

News Feed is Facebook’s home page for all of us & hundreds of friends posting various content on it. Hence, we’re more likely to miss an important one which we might have liked to check-out. And, after recent changes made by Facebook it became more difficult to track all the updates and get hold of every notification. (Thanks Facebook for stopping e-mail notifications)

So, what settings we can use to make use of Facebook for ourselves?

1] Create & Manage Friends List

I am sure many of you did use this feature on older version; similarly, Facebook has added more lists with default filters. This is extremely beneficial when we receive friend requests from unknown people.

For example: If I receive a friend request from X; then I would accept the request & put it under Restricted list. By default, ever person under Restricted list will only be able to see my Public updates. Also, even though we accept them as friend, sharing with Friends does not include Restricted list. Cool, eh?

After some time when I to know X & feel comfortable then I can move him/her to other list from Restricted.

You can change your friends list or should practice it when accept new friend requests.

2] Use Close Friends or Acquaintances List

As you could clearly see, these two lists are separated from others on importance. And, they do really important work they meant to do. Facebook’s algorithm hides posts or updates from friends with whom you haven’t been in touch for longer period. Its logical, but this way we miss updates from close friends, who don’t often post on Facebook. But.. still any update from them is a pleasant news for us.

Also, to build good online social network with friends or acquaintances – it is important to see and interact with their updates. New Facebook design allows us to get notified whenever there is an update or new photos coming from people marked under these lists.

To do so, you can add them to list as mentioned above or you can always navigate to Close Friends list from left pane on Facebook home page.

One can of course add girl-friends or boy-friends in this list to be able to promptly respond to it. lol

3] Offer Subscription and Modify Subscriptions

I covered in my earlier post about Facebook Subscription. Offering Facebook subscriptions can possible avoid many unknown friend requests from people only interested in your publicly shared information or photos or links. So, don’t forget to offer subscription.

Secondly, by default – we’re subscribed every user under our friend’s list. Again, this can bring up many less important updates to your news feed. You can avoid it by visiting those friend’s profiles and hover to Subscribed button on right hand top of the wall & select your options.

4] Block Updates from Games and Apps or even Friends

Facebook Apps & Games provide plenty of opportunities to developers but some people create really crap applications like Top Ten Matrix Friends and so on. I never liked these type of apps but they keep showing up because our friends like them. Well, I can’t tell every friend to stop using such applications but I can certainly hide these updates.

So, whenever you see any such updates from games, apps or tagged friends then simply mouse-hover that story and click on an arrow button to select options.

Additionally, you can do this by navigating to App page and click Block from left pane.

5] Unfollow Commented Posts

Commenting, discussing, debating, praising, supporting status updates or photos, is a nicest part of Facebook. Sometimes, we may feel the need of un-following posts we commented on to stop getting notifications about it when someone else is commenting on it.

This comes very handy for older posts and especially for discussions happening on Facebook pages or groups. I often use it. All we have to do is, click Unfollow.

6] Check Notification Setting

As I said, Facebook has recently stopped sending one email per activity instead only prompts with a notification message when logged in. Its nice but some of you would like to receive emails so that you can track activities when not logged in. To do so, you will have to untick default option on Notification Settings page

7] Manage Group Notifications

This is one of most asked and annoying part of Facebook where friends can add us to any group they like without our permission. The only way out is to select ‘Leave Group’ option from the group’s page.

Also, even if you’re an active member of the group & if you don’t wish to receive notification about every new update in a group then too you can change notification settings for each group. We can still navigate to the group page to see activities happening. Or, select to get notified if a friend posts in a group. Right? I used to get tons of notification from groups & from people I never wished to know about.

Update: Sorting stories

Facebook recently added an option to sort appearance of updates on News Feed. So, here is how to sort news feed on Facebook.

Just below right of Update Status button there’s a Sort button on a separator line. Click on drop-down to select High-lighted stories first or Recent stories first.

Recent stories option will show you news as they are posted whereas, Highlighted stories would have a blue mark to let know us about its priority no matter at what time of the day it was posted.

Notes

I hope these settings help you experience Facebook in much better (filtered) way. I surely would like to update again in case of more options added by Facebook. Don’t forget to check 10 privacy settings for Facebook.
