Lenovo has introduced the AI Student Phone L1 in China, a compact mobile device designed specifically for school-going children. Instead of functioning like a conventional smartphone, the device focuses on learning, safety and communication by leaving out games, social media platforms and web browsing.
Priced at 339 yuan, with some launch and pre-sale offers listing it at 299 yuan, the phone costs approximately Rs 3,600 to Rs 4,100 in India (depending on the exchange rate). It is aimed at parents who want their children to stay connected while avoiding the distractions commonly associated with smartphones.
Compact Design With Learning at Its Core
The AI Student Phone L1 resembles a modern feature phone more than a traditional smartphone. It features a 1.83-inch touchscreen protected by Panda Glass and also supports handwriting input.
The device packs a 1,850mAh battery and supports 4G connectivity along with VoLTE calling. According to reports, it works with major Chinese telecom operators and does not require a dedicated IoT SIM card.
One of its standout features is a dedicated AI button. Children can press it to ask questions using voice commands and receive study-related assistance. The phone also includes built-in educational tools such as AI-powered question-and-answer support, mathematics formula references and English vocabulary assistance.
Safety Features Designed for Parents
Safety is a key focus of the AI Student Phone L1. The device supports GPS-based real-time location tracking, allowing parents to monitor their child’s whereabouts.
It also offers electronic fence alerts, which notify parents whenever a child enters or leaves predefined locations such as home or school.
A companion app gives parents access to several remote management features, including:
- Blocking unknown callers
- Setting phone usage schedules
- Restarting the device remotely
- Adding emergency SOS contacts
- Activating Classroom Mode
When Classroom Mode is enabled, the phone limits its functionality so children can only view the time and make SOS calls, helping minimise distractions during school hours.
QR Payments With Spending Controls
Lenovo has also included a QR-code payment feature for everyday purchases.
Parents can set daily or monthly spending limits and monitor all transactions through the companion app. This gives children limited access to digital payments while allowing parents to retain full control over spending.
Colours and Accessories
The AI Student Phone L1 comes with a detachable lanyard and is available in three colour options:
- Orange-White
- Pink
- Blue
A Different Approach to a Child’s First Phone

The Lenovo AI Student Phone L1 addresses that need by combining calling, location tracking, SOS support, AI-powered learning tools and controlled digital payments in a compact device that deliberately avoids social media and gaming.
Rather than replacing a smartphone, it is designed to serve as a supervised communication and learning device for younger students, offering essent
