Reviews won’t be out until shortly before launch. But everything Apple has confirmed, plus what people who’ve handled it are saying, is already enough to tell whether this phone is for you or whether you should wait.

Pre-Order Timeline: Three Dates to Remember
- October 12: Apple opens its “Get Ready” process. You can pick your model, check trade-in value and line up payment in the Apple Store app ahead of time. If you’re serious about launch-day delivery, do this. Popular configurations of new Apple products often slip to later delivery dates within minutes.
- October 16, 5 a.m. Pacific Time: pre-orders open. That’s 5:30 p.m. in India.
- October 23: the iPhone Duo goes on sale in stores in the US, India, the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and more than 60 other countries. Another 28 countries follow on October 30.
How Much the iPhone Duo Costs
In the US:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
In India:
- 256GB: ₹2,99,900
- 512GB: ₹3,24,900
- 1TB: ₹3,74,900
- 2TB: ₹4,49,900
For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US and ₹1,64,900 in India. In the US, the Duo costs $800 more. In India, the gap is ₹1,35,000, which is close to the price of a second iPhone 18 Pro.
What You Get for $800 More Than an iPhone 18 Pro
The main thing is the inner screen. At 7.6 inches it’s close to an iPad mini, and for the first time on an iPhone you can run two apps side by side in Split View. People who’ve tried it describe dragging photos from Photos straight into Messages, and reading, watching video or editing documents on a screen that doesn’t feel cramped.
Apple also solved the most visible problem with foldables: the crease. The inner screen has a nano-texture finish that scatters light, and early hands-on reports say you can feel the crease under your finger but can’t see it. That’s a real advantage over most foldables on sale.
Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming “later this year,” but it wasn’t available to test at launch events, so treat it as a promise for now.
What You Give Up
This is the part the launch videos skip. Compared with the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Duo is missing several things:
- No telephoto camera. The 18 Pro has a 4x telephoto that reaches 8x. The Duo tops out at 2x optical-quality zoom from its main sensor.
- No Face ID. Touch ID in the side button works well, but it’s a step back if you’re used to unlocking by looking.
- No physical SIM, anywhere in the world. That matters most in India, where many people still use physical SIMs. Jio, Airtel and Vi all support eSIM, but switching takes a few minutes with your carrier, and travellers who swap local SIMs abroad will find it less convenient.
- More weight. At 254g, it’s 5g heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 43g heavier than the 18 Pro.
- Shorter battery life when unfolded. Apple’s own figure for the inner screen is 31 hours of video, against 36 hours for the 18 Pro.
What to Worry About With a First-Generation Foldable
Every foldable has the same weak points: the hinge, the inner screen and its soft top layer. Apple has published more about these than most brands do at launch.
Repair Costs
The inner screen has a thin protective cover layer on top. Apple says it can be replaced, and with AppleCare+ in the US, that costs $19. Here’s the full AppleCare+ fee list Apple has published:
- AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss: $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year in the US
- Cover layer replacement: $19
- Outer screen or back glass: $29
- Inner display: $99
- Other accidental damage: $99
What Apple hasn’t published is the price of an inner screen repair without AppleCare+. On other foldables, that repair has typically cost several hundred dollars. If you buy an iPhone Duo, budget for AppleCare+ from day one. India pricing for AppleCare+ on the Duo hadn’t been announced at the time of writing.
Water and Dust Resistance
The good news is water resistance. The iPhone Duo is rated IP68, up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. That’s better than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is rated IP48, meaning its dust protection is far weaker.
First-Generation Risk
And there’s the usual first-generation caution. The first version of anything new tends to have problems no lab test catches. If you can wait six months, you’ll know whether hinges and screens are holding up in real use.
iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the obvious rival. Here’s how they compare on the numbers.
- Price (US): Fold 8 from $1,899, Duo from $1,999
- Price (India): Fold 8 from ₹1,74,999, Duo from ₹2,99,900
- Weight: Fold 8 201g, Duo 254g
- Thickness folded: Fold 8 9.7mm, Duo 11.3mm
- Thickness unfolded: Fold 8 4.5mm, Duo 5.2mm
- Water and dust: Fold 8 IP48, Duo IP68
- SIM: Fold 8 physical SIM and eSIM, Duo eSIM only
- Multitasking: Fold 8 runs three apps at once plus floating windows, Duo runs two side by side
On paper, Samsung wins on weight, thickness, multitasking and, especially in India, price. The gap is ₹1,24,901 at the base model. Apple wins on dust resistance, the near-invisible crease, and the fact that it’s an iPhone. If your life runs on iMessage, AirDrop, your Apple Watch and iCloud, the Fold 8 isn’t really an option, however good it is.
Who Should Buy the iPhone Duo, and Who Should Wait
Buy it if you’ve wanted a phone that turns into a small tablet, you’re already deep in Apple’s ecosystem, and the price doesn’t hurt. People who read a lot, edit documents on the go or travel with only a phone will get the most from it.
Wait if you take a lot of zoomed photos, since the 18 Pro’s telephoto is far better. Wait if you’re in India and the ₹1.35 lakh gap over an 18 Pro would be a stretch. And wait if you’re the kind of person who drops phones. The repair costs without AppleCare+ are still unknown.
If you’re unsure, there’s no penalty for waiting. Reviews are expected a few days before the October 23 launch, and real-world durability reports will follow in the months after. The phone isn’t going anywhere, and the second-generation model will almost certainly be lighter.
Quick Answers
When can I pre-order the iPhone Duo?
Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 5:30 p.m. in India. Apple’s Get Ready process opens on October 12, and the phone goes on sale on October 23.
What is the iPhone Duo price in India?
The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB. The 512GB model costs ₹3,24,900, 1TB costs ₹3,74,900 and 2TB costs ₹4,49,900.
Does the iPhone Duo have a SIM card slot?
No. The iPhone Duo is eSIM only in every country, including India. Jio, Airtel and Vi all support eSIM.
Does the iPhone Duo have a crease?
Yes, but you can barely see it. Apple uses a nano-texture finish that scatters light, and early hands-on reports say the crease can be felt but not seen.
Is the iPhone Duo waterproof?
It’s rated IP68, which Apple says covers depths up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. That’s better than the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s IP48 rating.
How much does it cost to fix the iPhone Duo’s inner screen?
With AppleCare+ in the US, an inner display repair costs $99 and replacing the screen’s top cover layer costs $19. Apple hasn’t published repair prices without AppleCare+.
Bottom Line
The iPhone Duo looks like the most polished first foldable any company has launched, and the nearly invisible crease is a real achievement. But it’s heavier than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, has a weaker zoom camera, drops Face ID and the SIM tray, and costs far more, especially in India. Buy it if you want a tablet that fits in your pocket and you’ll pay for AppleCare+. For everyone else, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better phone, and waiting for reviews costs you nothing.
