Most Used Display Monitor Screen Resolutions As Of April 2011

This post is more useful for digital media developers who design  – develop websites, interactive presentations, interactive learning CD & DVD-ROM, etc. Screen resolutions play very vital part in the life of these people for deciding on the canvas sizes and deployment of the projects either on Desktops or Mobile devices.

I am working on an interactive project where I wanted to gather information on most common Desktop and Laptop screen resolutions helping me decide the approach for the design, development and deployment of it. Hence, I thought it would be a great idea to share with you too.

These statistics are not going to change too much until the entire world starts using HD resolutions. These stats below are updated to show the latest numbers as of January 2014

What is Display Resolution or Graphic Display Resolution?

Graphic Display Resolution on Wikipedia

The graphics display resolution describes the width and height dimensions of a display, such as a computer monitor, in pixels. Certain combinations of width and height are standardized and typically given a name and an initialism that is descriptive of its dimensions. A higher display resolution means that displayed content appears sharper and smaller (depending on the physical size of the display).

Display Resolution on Wikipedia

The display resolution of a digital television or display device is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It can be an ambiguous term especially as the displayed resolution is controlled by all different factors in cathode ray tube (CRT) and flat panel or projection displays using fixed picture-element (pixel) arrays.

What are the common resolution sizes?

With the growing use of Laptops & Ultrabooks around the world, previously most common resolution of 1024×768 is now replaced by  1366×768 pixel resolution as the most-used display resolution with over 15% of the users.

Which are the resolutions do you use the most? If you’re a designer or a developer, what methods do you use to fit your project for different screen resolutions? Do you consider different resolutions or simply develop for one single resolution size? I am interested to know about these questions and would appreciate if you could write them through comments.
