Your phone held a charge all day last week. Now it’s at 40% by lunchtime, and nothing obvious has changed. Sudden drain is a different problem from a battery that’s gradually aged, and it almost always has a specific, findable cause rather than being a vague sign your phone is dying.
Here’s the order to work through it, starting with the cause that’s most likely right now, then the settings screen that names your actual culprit, and finally the popular “battery savers” that do nothing at all.
Did This Start After an Update?
If your drain began within a few days of an iOS or Android update, this is almost certainly your answer, and the fix is patience.
After a major update your phone reindexes photos, rebuilds search databases, and finishes setup tasks in the background. That’s genuinely heavy work, and it can run for two to three days. On iPhone, Apple even labels it: open Settings, Battery, and look for an insight reading Ongoing iOS Update or Ongoing Device Setup. On Android, enabling battery saver for the first 48 to 72 hours after an update gives the system room to finish without flattening you in the process.
So: restart the phone, then wait three days before doing anything drastic. If drain persists beyond that, it’s not indexing and the sections below apply. And if a specific app broke with the update, its own update usually fixes it, so check the App Store or Play Store rather than blaming the OS.
Find the Actual Culprit
Stop guessing and read the data, which both platforms give you.
iPhone: Settings, Battery, then look at the usage breakdown and switch to the longer time range for a fuller picture. Android: Settings, Battery, Battery Usage.
What you’re looking for is an app consuming a large share of battery disproportionate to the time you actually spent using it. An app showing 25% consumption with two hours of screen time is doing its job. An app showing 25% with four minutes of use is misbehaving, and that mismatch is the whole diagnostic.
Once you’ve named it, your options in order: update the app, restrict its background activity, or delete it. On iPhone, restricting means Settings, General, Background App Refresh, and turning it off for that app. On Android, Settings, Apps, the app, Battery, then Restrict background activity.
Is your phone warm while idle? That’s a process stuck in a loop. Restart first, and if the heat returns, the battery usage screen will usually name the culprit.
What’s Actually Normal
Useful benchmarks, since a lot of “abnormal” drain turns out to be ordinary use:
Active screen-on use like browsing or social media runs roughly 8 to 15% per hour on most phones. Intensive tasks, gaming, navigation, video, run 15 to 25%. Screen off with normal background activity should be 1 to 3% per hour, and overnight standby closer to 0.5 to 1%.
The number that matters most: more than 3 to 4% per hour with the screen off points at background activity that shouldn’t be happening. That’s your signal that something is genuinely wrong rather than your phone simply being used.
The Five Settings That Matter
In rough order of impact.
- Screen brightness. The display is the single biggest consumer of power on any phone, and manual brightness at 80% all day dwarfs every app on your list. Turn on auto-brightness and let it work.
- Background App Refresh, turned off for anything that doesn’t genuinely need to update while closed. Social media, news, and shopping apps are the reliable offenders. Messaging and email apps are worth keeping.
- Location set to Always. Go through your location permissions and switch everything from Always to While Using the App, except genuine exceptions like navigation. An app holding a constant GPS lock is one of the heaviest drains available.
- Always-on display, if your phone has one. It’s a real cost for a modest convenience.
- Live activities, widgets, and constant-refresh notifications, which look small individually and add up.
On Samsung specifically, Settings, Battery has Background usage limits with a “Put unused apps to sleep” option that automates most of this, and a Light performance profile under Device care.
The Signal Problem Nobody Knows About
This one surprises people and explains a lot of mystery drain.
When your phone has a weak cellular signal, it increases its transmit power trying to stay connected, and it keeps doing that continuously. A day spent in a basement office, a rural area, or a building with poor reception can flatten a battery that’s otherwise perfectly healthy, with no app to blame.
The tells: your battery drains much faster in one specific location, or while travelling, and your phone shows one or two bars. The fixes: switch to Wi-Fi calling where you have Wi-Fi, use airplane mode in genuine dead zones rather than letting the phone hunt, and if your area has patchy 5G, manually selecting 4G can be measurably kinder to your battery.
The “Fixes” That Do Nothing
Save your effort.
- Force-closing apps. The most persistent battery myth there is. Modern operating systems freeze background apps so they use almost nothing, and force-quitting means the phone has to reload the entire app from scratch next time, which costs more energy. The narrow exception is apps genuinely running in the background, navigation, video calls, music, or an app that’s visibly misbehaving. Otherwise let the system manage it.
- Dark mode, mostly. It only saves power on OLED screens, where black pixels are genuinely off, and does nothing on LCD panels. Even on OLED, the savings are far smaller than folklore suggests. Purdue University researchers who built a tool to isolate display power specifically found that the benefit largely evaporates at normal brightness levels, with lower brightness in light mode drawing about the same power as higher brightness in dark mode. It also helps far less than claimed because most “dark” app themes use dark grey rather than true black. Use it because you prefer it, not as a battery strategy.
- Third-party battery saver apps. They duplicate what your OS already does, want extensive permissions, and frequently run constantly themselves. Everything useful they claim to offer is already in Settings.
When It’s the Battery, Not the Software
If you’ve worked through all of the above and drain persists, the battery itself may have aged past usefulness.
