SHARE
Most Used Browsers and Total Market Share as of March 2011

The browser is an essential software required to surf the Internet and browse different websites. And for doing this, it needs to be fast, secured, easy to use and constantly updated with latest technologies like HTML 5, CSS3 and more.

In recent times we are seeing a Browser War happening around us with plenty of new browsers coming up with latest open source technologies and culture. But who’s leading the market share? What is a trend taking place? Let’s find it out.

I have considered a data for two years: March 2009 – March 2010 and then from March 2010 – March 2011. (I haven’t used March – February to avoid confusions and to get the latest data up to this month)

The data clearly show that Internet Explorer is (still) leading the charts, but its share is reduced. This is definitely due to a large number of Windows users and Internet Explorer is shipped by default with Windows. And it is reduced due to two main reasons: one is because IE is no more shipped by default along with Windows in European countries and second is, loss of popularity of its earlier versions.

Firefox share is also going down due to increase in share of Google Chrome, Opera and Safari. We also must understand that Chrome & Safari are used in mobile OS Android and iOS respectively. Both mobile OS is getting very popular and browser share reflects the part of them too. Google Chrome 10 and Opera 11 are providing great features by every version.
